The segment forms is called the Eastern Line and forms part of the 1,700-km railway network which is based on Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) designed for electric locomotives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction is scheduled to start in November 2024 and will last 48 months. The project cost is about  USD 3 billion with the financing coming the Ugandan government own funds and credit from export promotion banking institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rail section will connect the capital Kampala to Malaba near the border with Kenya. Thus, landlocked Uganda will be linked via rail t the seaport of Mombasa. The PS from the Ugandan Ministry of Works Bageya Waiswa stated that the project will bring down transport costs and contribute to boost regional trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e0d3c5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e0d3c5;\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"520\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Uganda-SGR-02-520x500-1-jpg.webp\" alt=\"Kampala-Malaba Rail Deal Makes Headlines on Daily Monitor\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-14206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Uganda-SGR-02-520x500-1-jpg.webp 520w, https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Uganda-SGR-02-520x500-1-300x288.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kampala-Malaba Rail Deal Makes Headlines on Daily Monitor<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is to be recalled that Uganda initially signed an agreement with China Harbor and Engineering Company (CHEC) for the same project under the proviso that the company secures the necessary funding from the Chinese government.
