On 6 May 2025, Bayobab<\/a> announced that it has completed the fiber optic link from Mombasa seaport in Kenya to the Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. The optical cable follows the Uganda railway from Kampala to Tororo, before being joined to the Kenya’s National Long Distance Fiber that extends from Mombasa to Malaba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running along the railway, the deployment of the 260-km of optical cable was executed in just a little more than a couple of months from December 2024 to February 2025. The optical cable provides capacity of one terabit per second and connects to the submarine cable landing station in Mombasa.<\/p>\n\n\n

The fiber backbones will link up major data centers and will be able to support hyperscalers in Uganda and Kenya. It is worth noting that Kenya has managed to attract big tech giants to build mega AI data centers by leveraging its rich renewable geothermal power source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to fiber connectivity, Bayobab has partnered with Eutelsat Group to offer satellite broadband. According to the multi-year agreement, Bayobab will be granted access to the Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, branded as Eutelsat OneWeb Constellation.
