The Standard Gauge Railway (<a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/sgr\/\">#SGR<\/a>) line cost approximately USD 447 million and was made possible via financing by the Indian EXIM Bank. Indian contractor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afcons.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Afcons<\/a> (NSE: AFCONS) &#8212; which also built the light rail transport (<a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/lrt\/\">#LRT<\/a>) in Mauritius &#8212; undertook the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>&#8220;We are proud to have executed the largest railway project in Ghana. This project will play a pivotal role in revamping and modernizing the country&#8217;s railway infrastructure. The construction over Volta River is a classic example of extreme engineering.&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Afcons MD S. As a matter of fact, the railway line complements the visionary masterplan that integrates rail, road and inland water transport which connects the port of Tema to the the port Buipe via the Volta Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trains have diesel locomotives and 2 Diesel Multiple Units (<a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/dmu\/\">#DMU<\/a>) were ready for use at the inauguration. The rail line has seven passenger stations and two rail head facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The line is a double-track and covers a distance of nearly 100 km. Eventually, the railway line will form part of the larger regional 1000-km Ghana-Burkina Faso <a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/connectivity\/\">#connectivity<\/a> project connecting Tema to Ouagadogou.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo commissioned the Tema-Mpakadan railway line on 22 November 2025.
