On 6 August 2025, Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srinivastava symbollically remitted the key to the first batch of 10 eBuses to the Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation at Ebene Cybercity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 10 buses are part of a gift of a total of 100 buses that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised under the Enhanced Strategic Partnership between India and Mauritius. During Modi’s official visit to Mauritius on the occasion of the Independence Day of Mauritius on 12 March 2025, he also announced the upgrade of SAGAR to MAHASAGAR as the India’s foreign policy in the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n

PM Ramgoolam underscored that the deployment of eBuses marks ‘a paradigm shift in public transport and a symbol of the special relationship that has stood the test of time.’<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HC Srinivastava highlighted the donation is in line with the broader effort for promoting the #EnergyTransition<\/a> in Mauritius. In that regard, India also supported Mauritius to set up a 8-MW PV farm in Henrietta, a community solar farm in Rodrigues and install 100 solar street lights. India has also built the largest transport infrastructure in Mauritius which is the light rail system, known locally as Metro Express.<\/p>\n\n\n

After the handover ceremony, the High Commissioner and the Prime Minister as well as several guests boarded an eBus and took a ride around the Ebene Cybercity. For the occasion, the bus was decorated with flowers and the peacock to add an auspicious and festive atmosphere to the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eBuses will be operated by the National Transport Corporation (NTC) of Mauritius. Currently, the NTC possesses 500 buses, which are mostly diesel-powered. The Minister of Land Transport Osman Mahomed reiterated his plan to implement a fleet management system with GPS tracking to enhance operation management and customer experience at the NTC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
