During the 2nd Global Gateway Forum 2025 (#GGF2025<\/a>), the EC President Ursula von der Leyen met with Ethiopian President Taye Selassie. The meeting took place in the context of the 50th anniversary of the 50th anniversary of EU-Ethiopia bilateral relations and focused on the reinforcement of economic partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To that effect, the EU is extending a EUR 105 million financial package to support economic reforms and the promotion of peace and security. The northern region of Tigray, bordering Eritrea, has witnessed armed conflict from 2020 to 2022, with a fragile truce in place. Out of the package, fifteen million euros is earmarked for refugees and returning migrants to ease their integration and enhance their resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the Global Gateway Initiative (#GGI<\/a>), the EU is particularly interested in investing in sectors in Ethiopia that are in line with the energy transition, digital transformation, climate-resilient food security, health sovereignty, and economic corridors. The EU and Ethiopia plan to collaborate on sustainable development, land governance, migration issues, and gender empowerment. <\/p>\n\n\n

EU Convened Global Gateway Board Meeting Prior to the Global Gateway Forum 2025<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

Around the same time, the #GlobalGateway<\/a> Board convened in Brussels under the chairship of the EC Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Sikela. Foreign ministers of EU member states, the Presidents of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) attended the board meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of the board meeting, it was decided to launch a new Investment Hub during #GGF2025<\/a>. The objective of the EU’s Global Gateway Initiative is to mobilize at least EUR 300 billion in public and private financing from 2021 to 2027 that supports the EU’s priorities and the recipient country’s development imperatives. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
