The objective is to unlock financing for Africa&#8217;s Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/sdg\/\">#SDG<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/greentransition\/\">#GreenTransition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"7b736e\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #7b736e;\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ACMI-COP27-w-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-3011\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ACMI-COP27-w-jpg.webp 600w, https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/ACMI-COP27-w-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Initiators of African Carbon Markets Initiative<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The sponsors for the initiative include Sustainable Energy for All (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seforall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SE4All<\/a>), UN Economic Commission for Africa (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uneca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNECA<\/a>), Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyalliance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GEAPP<\/a>) and the Rockefeller Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe current scale of financing available for Africa\u2019s energy transition is nowhere close to what is required. Achieving the Africa Carbon Markets Initiative targets will provide much-needed financing that will be transformative for the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>SE4All CEO Damilola Ogunbiyi<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2030, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/acmi\/\">#ACMI<\/a> ambitions to realize the following KPI:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Produce 300 million carbon credits annually and at least 1.5 billion by 2050<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unlock USD 6 billion in value and over USD 120 billion by 2050<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support 30 million jobs and over 110 million jobs by 2050<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/acmi\/\">#ACMI<\/a> will be led by a Steering Committee consisting of 13 members coming from African Head of Governments\/State, Industry Captains and Carbon Credit Experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his keynote address, Kenyan President William Ruto stressed the role that Africa can play in the prevention and mitigation of emissions, the protection of crucial ecosystems, and the restoration of precious carbon sinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe African voluntary carbon market will only succeed if people trust that African credits are driving real climate action and having a positive human impact. As the VCM scales in Africa, USAID and ACMI will ensure that it does so with integrity as a core pillar.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>During COP27, the ACMI also released its report entitled &#8220;Harnessing Carbon Markets for Africa at the initiative&#8217;s COP27 launch event.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenya, Malawi Gabon, Nigeria and Togo took the lead and displayed their commitment to work to make the ACMI a success. These 7 countries have the potential to generate 300 MtCO2e. In 2021, Africa carbon credits totaled only 37 MtCO2e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Standard Chartered Bank, Nando&#8217;s and the Exchange Trading Group are the major active private sector actors in the Carbon space, but many other corporates have expressed interest in the scheme to allow for a <a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/justenergytransition\/\">#JustEnergyTransition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cSustaining the rapid growth of African carbon markets isn\u2019t going to happen accidently, it\u2019s going to require action by governments, developers, and buyers. Together, we can unlock billions for climate finance and economic development in Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>GEAPP VP Joseph Nganga<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same breath, former Colombian President Ivan Duque announced the setting up of the Nature Framework Development Group which focuses on Biodiversity.
