class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 14th World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference (<a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/wto2026\/\">#WTO2026<\/a>) was hosted by Cameroon in the capital Yaounde from 26 to 30 March 2026. This edition took place amid global trade tensions and the resurgence of nationalism, reversing decades of globalization. As such, reaching a broad agreement was difficult, if not impossible, and outcomes were understandably mitigated. The Taiwan delegation pulled out of the meeting in protest after being labeled as &#8216;a province of China.&#8217; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dispute_Settlement\"><\/span>Dispute Settlement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The update to the trade dispute settlement system has been under discussion since 2019. Due to heightened and ongoing trade tensions, the Yaounde meeting was unable to agree on a clear reform roadmap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"eCommerce\"><\/span>eCommerce<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The moratorium on customs duties on electronic downloads is now 28 years old. US pushed for another extension, while Brazil and Turkey opposed it. However, 66 member states, representing 70% of global trade, did agree to move forward with a separate interim agreement on eCommerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Investment_Facilitation_for_Development\"><\/span>Investment Facilitation for Development<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A proposal to incorporate an IFD agreement into the WTO framework initially received broad support from nearly 75% of the members. India and Turkey opposed, but Turkey then lifted its opposition. India argued that investment falls outside the purview of the WTO and prefers investments to be handled via bilateral treaties. In that regard, negotiations on public stockholding stalled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fisheries\"><\/span>Fisheries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Negotiations on state subsidies to fishermen and distant-water fishing continued but no agreement was reached. The aim is to curb subsidies that drive overfishing. China has one the world&#8217;s largest DWF fleet. Although China backs the principle of reining in subsidies to control Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing, but not at the expense of its fishing sector.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"897368\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #897368;\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/WTO-03w-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-33837\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/WTO-03w-jpg.webp 600w, https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/WTO-03w-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Delegates at 14th WTO Ministerial 2026<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Small_Economies_and_Least_Developed_Countries\"><\/span>Small Economies and Least Developed Countries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Measures to improve the integration of small economies in the multilateral trading system were adopted. But the cohort agreed to continue negotiations with the hope of achieving a comprehensive agreement at the next Ministerial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Special_and_Differential_Treatment\"><\/span>Special and Differential Treatment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A few amendments to the operationalization of Special and Differential Treatment for small and vulnerable countries were adopted. The measures include Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT). China also claims SDT for fishing, citing &#8216;historical responsibility.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No joint declaration was issued during the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/tag\/wto2026\/\">#WTO2026<\/a>, reflecting a fractured world characterized by a revival of economic nationalism. Given the difficulty of reaching consensus, this 14th edition witnessed a shift to coalition-driven rule-making.
