On 29 January 2026, Tianqi Lithium announced that Chile’s Supreme Court had rejected its appeal to block a partnership between SQM and Chile’s State-Owned Enterprise Codelco, which will in effect, transfer control of SQM to the state. Codelco and SQM can go ahead and create the JV called Nova Andino Litio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the JV, the shareholding of Tianqi will be diluted, while the Chilean Government will become the controlling shareholder. SQM main #lithium<\/a> mine in Chile is the Salar de Atacama, a salt flat filled with lithium-rich brine that is one of the largest deposits and cheapest to extract basins in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on 2025 figures, Chile (48 kT) is the third-largest producer of lithium in the world, behind Australia (92 kT) and China (62kT). The top three countries account for 80% of global production. At the end of the value chain, China produces nearly 60% of all lithium batteries. Actually, two Chinese companies, CATL and BYD, make more than half of the world’s lithium batteries. <\/p>\n\n\n

Tianqi is also involved in an ongoing legal dispute with MSP Engineering over its Australian Kwinana lithium refinery. The dispute is over a payment of USD 39 million. In addition, the Kwinana lithium hydroxide plant has experienced delays and cost overruns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to redress the situation, Tianqi has proposed to renegotiate its JV terms with partner IGO, which has questioned the viability and basically written off the project. The original plan was to reach an annual production capacity of 24,000 tonnes, but that sounds like a distant dream at the moment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
