On 10 December 2024, CATL and Stellantis signed an agreement to build a #lithium<\/a> gigafactory in Zaragoza, Spain. The partnership is a 50\/50 Joint Venture between the world’s largest battery maker and the world’s 3rd largest automaker, with iconic brands such as Jeep, Chrysler, Citroen, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, to name a few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is estimated to cost EUR 4.1 billion and the first phase is forecasted to become operational by the end of 2026. The production capacity can ramp to 50 GWh, depending on demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Stellantis uses both lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for its electric vehicles (#EV<\/a>). It is to be recalled that the EU has set 2035 as the deadline to phase out vehicles powered by fossil fuels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Zaragoza factory is the third CATL battery plant in Europe. The first one is in Thuringia, Germany, with a capacity of 14 GWh and started production in 2023. Another plant is in Debrecen, Hungary, with a capacity of 100 GWh; it is expected to start production in 1Q26. Previously in 2023, Stellantis signed an MoU with CATL for the supply of batteries and to align the two companies’ strategic roadmaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some 2,000 workers will be mobilized during the construction phase at the Figueruelas site. Upon completion, the plant will create 4,000 direct jobs. During construction, CATL has partnered with local Spanish universities to train local workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In line with its green mobility drive, the Zaragoza plant is designed to have a minimal carbon footprint. Nearly 80% of its energy needs will come from renewable energy, and it will adhere to the International Industry 4.0 standards, which the EU has adopted and is promoting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
