From 19 to 20 May 2026, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin was on an official visit to China. The visit occurred mere days after the US President Trump’s visit. However, Russian officials clarified that the visit was already decided back in February 2026 and Trump actually postponed his visit once due to the situation in the Middle East. Many observers believe that the back-to-back visits of Trump and Putin were painstakingly choreographed to promote the image of China as a superpower. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both countries signed more than 20 documents covering a gamut of areas. Aside from the Joint Statement, another keynote document focuses on building a ‘New Model of Partnership in a Multipolar World’. The visit took place 25 years after the landmark 2001 China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, which was thus formally extended on the occasion. Another document listed the priorities of Russia-China Economic Cooperation until 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n

The two countries agreed to build a new cross-border railway to ease logistics bottlenecks. The railroad connects Manzhouli in Inner Mongolia, China, to Zabaikalsk, in Russia’s Far East. Previously, Russia used 1520-mm gauge rails, while China’s is 1435-mm. The new agreement allows the extension of 1435-mm gauge rail to the Russian side. According to studies conducted by the Russian Ministry of Transport, the project will allow an additional 50 pairs of trains to cross daily, thanks to the streamlined crossing without the need for transhipment. On a related note, China extended visa-free travel for Russians through 2027 to deepen people-to-people (#P2P<\/a>) exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both sides confirm their commitment to the long-term supply of coal, oil and gas by Russia to China. Russia has always been a major supplier of energy to China and sends #LNG<\/a> to China via the Power of Siberia One pipeline. Putin expressed a desire to implement the Power of Siberia Two pipeline, but the two have yet to reach a definite agreement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the one hand, Russia’s dependence on China has increased after its conflict with Ukraine as the EU started to cut off Russian gas. On the other hand, China is wary about creating too much dependence on one country or one part of the world, and has been working to diversify its energy supplies for decades, while vigorously driving the #EnergyTransition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
