From 20 to 21 May 2026, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa conducted a state visit to Botswana to attend the 6th Bi-National Commission (BNC) under the overarching theme of #RegionalIntegration<\/a>. On the occasion, he was accompanied by Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen, Minister of Water & Sanitation Pemmy Majodina, Minister of Electricity & Energy Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Minister of Mineral & Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Trade, Industry & Competition Parks Tau, and Minister of International Relations & Cooperation Ronald Lamola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, his entourage during his mission included captains of industry, including senior executives from the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA), South African Airways (SAA), and Transnet. They attended the Botswana-South Africa Business Forum held at the Royal Aria Conference Center in Tlokwent on 21 May 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n

Among the key cooperation documents signed, we note:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water Management of the Limpopo River<\/strong>. The MoU covers the monitoring of the water quality of the Upper Limpopo River Basin. In addition, both sides agree to go forward with the Lesotho-South Africa-Botswana (LESABO) Water Transfer feasibility study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy Cooperation<\/strong>. The Agreement seeks to expand cross-border grid integration via the South Africa Power Pool (#SAPP<\/a>) and to enhance power stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Correctional Services<\/strong>. The Agreement will facilitate cooperation in prison services and foster rehabilitation for inmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aeronautical Search and Rescue Services<\/strong>. The Agreement will improve response to airspace emergencies by pooling resources and sharing information.<\/p>\n\n\n

One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) at Martin’s Drift<\/strong>. The #OSBP<\/a> will be upgraded, along with an extension of operating hours based on volume. The immigration and customs procedures will also be streamlined in view of the increased traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mmamabula-Lephalale Railway<\/strong>. Both sides recognized the heavy-haul cross-border rail as a ‘high-impact priority project’ that connects Botswana’s rich mineral reserves to South Africa’s rail network and global export seaports. Thus, Presidents Boko and Ramaphosa will personally ensure that the project is fast-tracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next Bi-National Commission is scheduled to take place in South Africa in 2027. Diplomatic and technical officials from both sides will continue to have working sessions to monitor progress and prepare new items for the next bilateral Summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
