On 11 June 2026, the Government of Kenya announced that it had awarded the contract to expand the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC). The project is estimated at USD 2.9 billion, and construction is slated to start shortly in July 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project will add a new passenger terminal capable of handling an additional 10 million passengers annually. Presently, the Nairobi airport is handling nearly 8.9 million passengers per annum, well above its design capacity of 7.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, Adani Group of India won the contract to expand the airport, but the deal came under scrutiny when Adani was investigated for wrongdoing by the US Department of Justice. Thus, the deal was cancelled, and a new bidding exercise was carried out. However, Adani was supposed to undertake the project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with a 30-year concession, whereas CCCC will be implementing it under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model.<\/p>\n\n\n

Funding for the project comes from a global consortium comprising the African Development Bank (AfDB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is part of the 20-year master plan 2025-2045. In addition to the airport per se, the Government of Kenya is expanding logistics capabilities by planning to increase freight handling capacity from the current 407,000 tonnes to 860,000 tonnes. A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) next to the airport is also part of the master plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase One consists of the addition of the new passenger terminal and a new runway and is expected to be completed by 2031. China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) — or its subsidiary China Roads and Bridges (CRB) — has gained quite some experience in Kenya as it counts the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway and the Nairobi Expressway under its belt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
