From 5 to 11 July 2026, Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was on a state visit to China. It marked the first official overseas tour of President Nandi-Ndaitwah since she was elected in 2025. During the visit, Namibia and China upgraded their diplomatic relations to “An All-Weather Community with a Shared Future for the New Era.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two sides signed eight documents covering agriculture, education, energy and mining. Namibia welcomes Chinese investors in #CriticalMinerals<\/a> since Namibia is rich in #uranium<\/a>, lithium, copper and rare earths, with an emphasis on local value addition (#LVA<\/a>). Historically, the partnership between Namibia and China revolved around uranium. In the future, the two sides will collaborate in the production of Green Hydrogen (#GH2<\/a>) and the deployment of utility-scale photovoltaic (#PV<\/a>) farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other flasghip cooperation projects include the expansion of the Walvis Bay Port, the construction of the Hage Geingob Freeway and the Husab Desalination Plant. China National Nuclear Corporation has taken a minority stake in the Etango Uranium Project, while Sinomine has built a copper smelter in Tsumeb.<\/p>\n\n\n

Following the announcement by China to extend zero-tariff to Africa, Namibian grapes will be eligible for export to China, subject to meeting the sanitary and phytosanitary (#SPS<\/a>) requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the education front, China is willing to support the expansion of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (#TVET<\/a>) in Namibia. The program will target the youth to help them to find gainful employment in emerging sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Namibia is also keen to develop its oil sector. Recently, Shell and TotalEnergies together made discoveries of oil reserves estimated at 2.6 billion barrels. In view of the investments in hydrocarbons, Namibia ambitions to become Africa’s 4th largest oil producer by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n

China is 2nd largest trading partner of Namibia, behind South Africa. In 2025, bilateral trade volume reached USD 2.2 billion, with Namibia achieving a remarkable trade surplus of USD 260 million. Namibia exports mostly raw minerals to China. Uranium, thorium and other radioactive materials made up more than USD 1.5 billion in exports. #Copper<\/a> and nickel ores exports are also ramping up since Chinese mining giants, Chinalco and Sinomine, entered Namibia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the investment side, China has cumulatively poured USD 4.2 billion in Namibia, positioning China as the largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (#FDI<\/a>). Most of the investments went into the mining sector. Outside mining, West China Cement and Sany Equipment have plans to develop local manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Nandi-Ndaitwah visited the China General Nuclear Power Corporation, Guangzhou Automobile Corporation, and Huawei Technologies. She also had meetings with Sinomine, Sany, Lovol, China National Chemical Engineering Corporation and Sichuan Investment Group. To promote trade and investment, she attended several business fora in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
