Act East and MAHASAGAR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From 6 to 11 July 2026, India’s PM Narendra Modi conducted a three-nation #IndoPacific<\/a> tour to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand. The overseas mission aims to reinforce India’s Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR Vision by fostering trade, defense and #MaritimeSecurity<\/a>. It is highly symbolic that the first stop, Indonesia, is the largest Muslim country by population, while India is the largest Hindu country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program of the visits followed the now familiar patterns seen in other state visits. Other than formal bilateral meetings, Modi attended business fora and met with the Indian Diaspora in the countries visited. In Indonesia, Modi made it a point to tour the Hindu Prambanan Temple in the company of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to highlight the civilizational ties across centuries past.<\/p>\n\n\n

Indonesia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India and Indonesia have a trade base of USD 28 billion, which has remained largely in favor of Indonesia and is more or less stagnant over the past few years. Thus, Modi aims to redress the trade imbalance and to give a new impetus to bilateral trade. Currently, the trade is anchored by Indonesia’s exports of coal and palm oil to India, with coal accounting for nearly USD 8 billion and palm oil adding another USD 4 billion. On the other hand, India exports mostly refined petroleum, commercial vehicles, and agricultural produce to Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourteen pacts were signed covering #CriticalMinerals<\/a>, Maritime Security, and Defense. Indonesia is among the world’s top producers of #Nickel<\/a> and India needs it for its strategic industries. As part of a USD 630 million package, India is going to supply BrahMos missiles to Indonesia — which represents another overseas breakthrough for the India-Russia joint venture — after the Philippines and Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both countries revived talks on the Sabang Port project following the completion of the feasibility study. The Port is situated at the northern tip of Sumatra and can act as the gatekeeper to the Strait of Malacca on the Indian Ocean side. Sabang is also near the Great Nicobar Port being built by India.<\/p>\n\n\n

Australia <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bilateral trade between India and Australia was USD 34 billion in 2025. Australia enjoys a trade surplus, mainly through the supply of liquefied natural gas, coal, and copper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modi and his Australian counterpart Albanese attended the 3rd India-Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne. India secured a long-term agreement with Australia for the supply of uranium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to attract more investment from Australia to India, Modi met with some twenty captains of industry during the Australia-India CEO Forum and then a separate Australia-India Business Reception. India welcomes Australia’s Pension Funds, known as Superannuation Funds, which cumulate nearly USD nearly 5 trillion in assets, to partake in India’s success story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Zealand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India and New Zealand have a bilateral trade worth USD 4.2 billion. Modi and his New Zealand’s counterpart Luxon agreed to double the trade to USD 8.4 billion by 2030. The two sides signed 18 cooperation documents. <\/p>\n\n\n

India and New Zealand will cooperate in dairy production. New Zealand agreed to join the Global Biofuels Alliance initiated by India. Moreover, both sides are on track to finalize a Free Trade Agreement (#FTA<\/a>) after the official launch of negotiations in March 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big Picture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand sit at the interface between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. India and Australia form part of the Quad, while India, Indonesia, and Australia are all member states of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). In line with #MAHASAGAR<\/a>, India aims to be a central player within that strategic space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having signed cooperation agreements on Critical Minerals with Indonesia and Australia, India has expanded and diversified its Critical Minerals Partnership to 24 countries in just two years. Furthermore, India aims to develop nuclear energy to achieve its #NetZero<\/a> target by 2070.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
