During the Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on 23 July 2026, Ghana’s Minister of Finance Casseil Forson declared that the Government of Ghana had deposited USD 1.7 billion in a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana for financing the construction of the Accra – Kumasi Expressway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2026, the Government of Ghana approved a new shorter alignment, which cut down the travel distance from 198 to 176 kilometers. The Expressway covers a distance of 176 kilometers and has a total of six lanes, three in each direction. It will reduce travel from several hours to just two hours, while improving safety and reducing transportation costs. I<\/p>\n\n\n

In line with the latest highway technologies, the Expressway will incorporate intelligent transport systems and electronic tolling systems. Traditional amenities such as rest stops and emergency response centers will be placed strategically along the Expressway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ghana Armed Forces had already cleared nearly 122 kilometers of the 120-meter-wide Right-of-Way. The clearing represents nearly 70% of the corridor, and site preparation is expected to be completed by early September 2026. Actually, the Army has managed to clear nearly 90 kilometers in just nine weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n

As for the feasibility studies and detailed engineering designs, they are well on their way to being completed by the end of August 2026. If all goes according to plan, the tender is expected to be launched in September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Accra – Kumasi Expressway is a flagship project under President Mahama’s Big Push and has the potential to develop into the economic spine of the Ghanaian economy. The total cost of the Project is estimated at USD 4 billion and will be financed entirely by domestic sources and self-sustaining tolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
