On 31 July 2026, Canadian Environment Minister Julie Dalbrusin gave the stamp of approval to Canada Nickel’s Crawford Nickel Green Mining project in northwestern Ontario. The Crawford mine has the largest reserves of #nickel<\/a> deposits in the Western world. Nickel is one of the #CriticalMinerals<\/a> used in the manufacture of stainless steel and rechargeable batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crawford Project is innovative in the sense that part of its funding comes from #GreenFinancing<\/a>. Using proprietary technology, Canada Nickel is able to sequester carbon dioxide using the tailings from the mine. By capturing 710,000 tonnes of carbon annually (tCO2), it will be able to monetize the #CarbonCredits<\/a> and be eligible for federal tax credits. Actually, Canada Nickel has appointed SB1 Markets to arrange an advance of USD 600 million against these future carbon credits. Over the lifespan of the mine, Crawford projects it will be able to fix 18 million tCO2, which is currently valued at USD 25 per tonne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crawford mine is located around 42 kilometers north of Timmins. Canada Nickel (TSXV: CNC<\/a>) intends to raise as much as USD 5 billion using a mix of equity and debt financing. Once in operation, it will sustain nearly 4,000 jobs. The life expectancy of the mine is more than 40 years. <\/p>\n\n\n

The Crawford Mine is one of 18 strategic projects identified by the Canadian Government to be fast-tracked and monitored via the Major Projects Office. These strategic projects have the potential to boost Canada’s economy and reduce reliance on foreign sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Indonesia (65%), Russia (25%), and the Philippines (10%) are the top nickel mining nations in the world. Global production hovers around 3.6 million tonnes annually. Controlling 75% of global nickel supply, Indonesia and the Philippines have established the IndoPhil Nickel Corridor<\/a> in a bid to control the global nickel market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“#Nickel<\/a> is one of those commodities that China has been able to garner siginificant influence. Two-thirds of the world’s nickel now comes from Indonesia through plants that are largely Chinese-controlled.”<\/p>\nCanada Nickel CEO Mark Selby<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

#Nickel<\/a> has wide applications in aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors. Used in batteries, nickel helps to extend the range. Therefore, it is typically reserved for heavy-duty and high-end vehicles such as trucks, large cars, and luxury vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was approved was the main federal permit, but a few other permits at the provincial and federal levels are still pending. The Crawford Project is expected to break ground by early 2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
