On 2 October 2025, Golden Concord performed its foundation stone-laying ceremony for the first-ever oil refinery in Gode, in southeastern Ethiopia, near the border with Somalia. Other than the Chairman of Golden Concord ZHU Gongshang, the key guests included Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed and Dangote Group Chairman Aliko Dangote, who was in Ethiopia for the launch of his fertilizer plant nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PM Ahmed focused his remarks on unity for progress and moving away from foreign dependence in the face of geopolitical uncertainties. Dangote praised the Ethiopian Government for creating an attractive environment for investment and reiterated his shared commitment to boost industrialization across Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Gode Refinery Project is estimated to cost USD 2.5 billion and is a Joint Venture between Golden Concord (85%) and Ethiopian Investment Holdings (15%). The final processing capacity of the refinery is 70,000 barrels per day, or 3.5 million tonnes per year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Phase I consists of the building of the distillation tower and is expected to be completed within 24 months. During Phase II, the site will evolve into a comprehensive petrochemical complex and will be able to produce chemicals, in addition to refined petroleum products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Gode Fertilizer Plant is located next to the Oil Refinery. The Fertilizer Project is a joint venture between the Dangote Group (60%) and the Ethiopian Investment Holdings (40%). It will require an investment of USD 2.5 billion and will be modeled after Dangote’s flagship Fertilizer Plant in Lekki, Nigeria. The Gode Plant is designed to output 3 million tonnes of urea annually.<\/p>\n\n\n
Locating the Fertilizer Plant next to Oil Refinery is no coincidence because the two projects intend to leverage the synergies between the two. As a matter of fact, Dangote has initiated discussions with Golden Concord for an energy offtake agreement. Both projects will also be able to share in the infrastructure around Gode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Oil Refinery plans to obtain its hydrocarbons from the Calub and Hilala Fields in the Ogaden Basin in the Somali Regional State. The Calub Field is predominantly a gas asset, while the Hilala Field is a mix of oil and gas. The scope of the project encompasses the construction of a 108-kilometer pipeline from the Calub Field to the Gode Fertilizer Plant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
