{"id":4013,"date":"2023-07-19T07:10:27","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T07:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/?p=4013"},"modified":"2023-10-19T10:04:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T10:04:45","slug":"india-voices-concerns-of-global-south-at-g20-finance-ministers-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/index.php\/2023\/07\/19\/india-voices-concerns-of-global-south-at-g20-finance-ministers-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"India Voices Concerns of Global South at G20 Finance Ministers Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam hosted the 3rd Meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the G20 in Gandhinagar from 17 to 18 July 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, no consensus statement could be issued at the end of the meeting, but an outcome document was issued, summarizing the meeting and noting the differences.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"525558\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #525558;\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/G20-Fin-Meet-02w-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-4017\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/G20-Fin-Meet-02w-jpg.webp 600w, https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/G20-Fin-Meet-02w-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">3rd G20 Finance Ministers Meeting under Indian Presidency<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>According to document which was made public, China and Russia objected to paragraphs stating that the war in Ukraine is causing &#8220;immense human suffering&#8221; and &#8220;exacerbating existing fragilities in the global economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several G20 members also condemned Russia for not extending the deal to allow the export of Ukrainian grains through the Black Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the subject of debt, US Treasury Secretary Yellen underscored that half of low-income countries are in or near debt distress, which is double the number in 2015. IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva agreed that there is an urgent need for a more effective debt restructuring process. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"ad939b\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #ad939b;\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/G20-Fin-Meet-03w-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-4022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/G20-Fin-Meet-03w-jpg.webp 600w, https:\/\/gbc1.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/G20-Fin-Meet-03w-300x200.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>World Bank President Ajay Banga echoed the concerns by underlining that lack of progress in debt management is fanning distrust between the Global North and Global South. A call for reforms at the Bretton Woods institution appears to be not only necessary but extremely urgent. A Multi-Lateral Convention (MLC) is under discussions with some countries still debating certain specific terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting, other issues were discussed, including Financial Inclusion, Digital Currencies and Global Minimum Tax. The OECD is the one leading the global tax reforms with a so-called Two Pillar Solution where companies will have to pay a certain level of tax where they operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has taken a neutral stance on the Ukraine-Russia conflict but has voiced concerns over the negative impact that the prolonged war is having on the world economy.
