Kribi Port Plans Major CFAF 20B Expansion

On 18 May 2026, Kribi Port finalized its CFAF 20 billion expansion plan. The Project is scheduled to kick off in June 2026 and will upgrade the container yard storage capacity to 34,000 TEU. After expansion, Kribi forecasts its annual throughput to reach 1.2 million TEU annually.

Earlier in the month, the Kribi Port Industrial Zone (KPIZ) also held a signing ceremony for the project, worth EUR 795 million. During the same month, Kribi Port welcomed the MSC Turkiye, one of the world’s largest container ships, measuring nearly 400 meters long and with a capacity of 24,346 TEU.

Other than the container terminal and industrial zone, the Port of Kribi also has several specialized berths in the pipeline. These bulk terminals will handle up to 100 million tonnes of goods, including iron ore, aluminum, cereal, oil, and liquefied natural gas. These developments form part of Cameroon’s Vision 2040 National Development Plan (#NDP).

At the end of the day, Kribi is expected to contribute between 5% to 8% to the national GDP. Upon completion, the Port and Industrial Zone will create 150,000 direct and indirect jobs. In line with the #EnergyTransition, the Port envisages building a renewable power plant using palm oil and wood residues for a capacity of up to 100 MW.

For Phase I and II, China EXIM Bank provided about 80% of the financing to the tune of nearly USD 1.5 billion. The remainder of the financing came from the Government of Cameroon. China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) was the main contractor.

Africal Global Logistics, a subsidiary of MSC, holds a 25-year concession on the container terminal. The other partners include CMA CGM and CHEC.

The Project for the latest container yard expansion, costing CFAF 20 billion, will be financed by the Port Authority of Kribi and KCT.
