JICA Grants $11M to Rebuild Natete Bridge along Nacala Corridor

On 28 August 2026 in Maputo, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Mozambique signed a grant agreement, whereby Japan will fund the reconstruction of Natete Bridge, located in the Ribaue District of Nampula Province in northeastern Mozambique. JICA Mozambique Representative Takahashi Sulimara and Mozambican Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Maria Manso signed the agreement.

The Natete Bridge is located on National Highway 13, along the #NacalaCorridor. Due to recent flooding, the bridge suffered irreparable damage. Thus, the new climate-resilient design shall take into consideration the higher risk and greater intensity of flooding.

The Project cost is estimated at JPY 1.7 billion ($10M), and its implementation is expected to take 35 months, including design, procurement, and construction. The fund will cover the design and consulting services, proper disposal of the bridge debris, and construction of the approach roads and the new bridge. The bridge and river banks will also be reinforced to better withstand #ClimateChange. Mozambique’s National Roads Administration (ANE) is in charge of executing the Project.

The Nacala Corridor is a flagship project under Mozambique’s Five-Year National Development Plan (#NDP) from 2025 to 2029. At the same time, the Nacala Corridor was identified as a flagship project at #TICAD9. JICA also underlines that the project is in line with several UN Sustainable Development Goals (#SDG): SDG9 for infrastructure, SDG11 for sustainability, and SDG13 for climate.
