Angola and Brazil’s Novonor Sign Contract for Luena-Saurimo Railway

On 27 January 2028, Angola’s Minister of Transport Ricardo d’Abreu attended the official groundbreaking ceremony for the 260-km Luena-Saurimo rail project. The railway is a branch off the Benguela Railway and will linki Luena in the province of Moxico to Saurimo in the province of Linda Sul, which is a famous diamond mining hub in Angola.

On that occasion, Minister D’Abreau signed the contract with Brazil’s Novonor, which is the main contractor to implement the project. Actually, its subsidiaries Oderbrecht Engenharia e Construcao and Bento Pedroso Construcoes will be the ones involved.

Minister Ricardo d’Abreau underscores that the railway line is the materialization of the strategic vision of the government to bring about economic growth, territorial integration and the enhancement of the national logistics network.

On his part, Odebrecht President Rodrigo Melo highlighted the this contract signing reinforces the relationship of trust between his company and the Government of Angola and Odebrecht is proud to be able to contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.

The Luena – Saurimo line will be based on a 1067-mm gauge. The Project includes the construction of 11 bridges, 8 stations and two junctions. Construction is expected to take five years.

The Project cost is estimated at nearly USD one billion. Financing is being arranged by HSBC and is expected to close by the end of the year.
