BYD Opens First Showroom in Tanzania

On 22 January 2026, BYD officially opened its first showroom in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. In addition to sales, the facility is also a service and repair center.

The showroom is owned and operated by Harmonious ICAR, which is the authorized dealer for BYD in Tanzania. The shop occupies a space of 2,000 square meters and is designed according to BYD’s international standards.

At the same time BYD showcased its Shark6 flagship model, as well other Electric Vehicles (#EV) suited for the local market such as the Dolphin Surf and Sealion 5DMi. During the opening ceremony, one lucky customer receive the keys to his new electric vehicle.

BYD is now the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, having overtake Tesla in 2025. The presence of BYD in Tanzania followed similar inroads in Rwanda and Zambia and fits with the development of emerging markets by BYD.

BYD is rumored to be considering to set up an assembly plant in either South Africa or Morocco. Actually, several Chinese car makers are looking at ‘moving overseas’ to be closer to growing markets and to avoid customs tariffs.
