Mozambique Awards Concession to Chinese Consortium for Machipanda Border Post
At the end of July 2026, the Government of Mozambique awarded a concession to a JV of two Chinese companies, namely, Union Portlink Capital and Zhongmei Engineering Group, to build and operate the Machinpanda border post. The agreement is a Public-Private Partnership (#PPP), whereby the Chinese JV owns a 75% stake, the Mozambican Government keeps 15% ownership, and local businesses own the remaining 10%.
The concession has a term of 25 years and the project is estimated to cost USD 37 million. Machipanda will be operated as an One-Stop Border Post (#OSBP) between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Works are expected to kick off in October 2026.
Union Portlink Capital and Zhongmei Engineering Group are also partnering to develop the Beira Port Access Road and the Dondo Logistics Terminal. These projects are valued at USD 160 million. On the other side in Zimbabwe is the Forbes Border Post in Mutare, which the Government of Zimbabwe is also planning to upgrade.
