Mahama Commissioned Phase 3 of Zonda Vehicle Assembly Plant

On 15 September 2026, Ghana’s President John Mahama officially commissioned Phase III of the Zonda Vehicle Assembly Plant in Kpone, near the port city of Tema. The new facility has a production capacity of 3,000 vehicles annually and is designed to assemble passenger vehicles such as SUV and Pickups from Great Wall Motor (GWM) and Chery. It will start with the Chery Tiggo 2 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro Max.

In her remarks, Zonda CEO, Mrs Yang Yang, highlighted that the new plant will produce high-quality vehicles and provide good-paying jobs for Ghanaians. In fact, the new facility will generate 1,000 new jobs, on top of the current employee count of about 800. Most of the workers will be recruited locally.

“Zonda Tec’s growth is itself a remarkable Ghanaian success story. From modest beginnings, Madam Yang Yang began as a vehicle distributor in the year 2010. The company she established has steadily transformed itself into Ghana’s leading assembler of heavy-duty vehicles, SUVs and small cars.”

Chery Director for West and Central Africa, Mr Hai Wei, underscored that the operationalization of this project is a historical milestone as it is the first assembly plant for Chery vehicles in Africa. Minister of Trade and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, commended the project as being aligned with the government’s #industrialization policy.

In the previous Phase II, Zonda’s Assembly Plant started the assembly of Sinotruk heavy commercial vehicles. Then, groundbreaking for Phase III took place in October 2023. Phase II required an investment of USD 30 million, and was jointly financed by Zonda, Ghana’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Sinotruk. For Phase III, the details have not been disclosed, but a similar arrangement is believed to have been made.
