BRICS Energy Ministers Meet to Discuss ‘Energy for All’

On 25 June 2026, #BRICS Energy Ministers gather in Gurugram under the chairship of India Union Power Minister Mahohar Kattar. The meeting is convened in the context of the market volatility for oil and gas due to the lingering tensions in the Persian Gulf.

As opposed to the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which failed to reach a consensus, the Energy Ministers managed to issue a Joint Statement. The sub-theme of Sarvesam Urjam, or Energy for All, seemed to strike a resonant chord with all the BRICS member states, including the new ones.

The Joint Statement focused on three fundamental pillars: Energy Security, Energy Equity, and Energy Technology. These will form the general framework for potential cooperation among BRICS member states.

India also proposed the setting up of a Digital Center of Excellence for Smart Grids and Energy Storage. In support, the Meeting also formally adopted the BRICS Guiding Principles on Smart Grids and Energy Storage.

As #EnergySecurity remains high on the agenda due to the conflict in the Middle East, BRICS sought to diversify their energy sources, while attempting to transition to green. Thus, biofuels and green hydrogen could be considered in addition to traditional renewable sources such as solar and wind. A BRICS Joint Report on Hydrogen Value Chains 2026 is also being drafted.

On the theme of the #EnergyTransition, BRICS reaffirmed that the global community must take into account distinct local circumstances and make allowance for diverse transition pathways. For instance, Brazil and India are willing to add more bioethanol to the energy mix as they are major sugar cane producers. On the other hand, it would be hard for top oil-producing countries like Russia and Iran to ditch their fossil fuels.
