Japan Fosters PRiDe in Uganda
In the wake of the success of the Promotion of Rice Development (#PRiDe) in Uganda, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is strengthening partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture of Uganda for a second round of the program.
The objective of #PRiDe is to enhance capacity of research and development of appropriate rice production technologies for productivity improvement by zone and strengthen the institutional framework for training and extension.
At the end of #PRiDe Phase I, the following outcomes were attained:
- Enhanced rice production through adoption of advanced rice technology
- Improved capacity building of Ugandan institutions such as NaCCRRI, MAAIF, etc
- Reinforce capabilities of institutions to produce seeds
- Disseminated rice production technologies through the MFS and ZARDI
As part of #PRiDe II, 19 demonstration sites were established in 15 districts across Uganda. 16 were managed by local governments while 3 were under JICA-UNHCR. The program is of great importance as #FoodSecurity is becoming a more acute issue due to the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
