France Finances Nairobi Commuter Rail to the Tune of $140M

During the visit of French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné in Nairobi, France and Kenya signed an agreement whereby France will provide financing to upgrade the Nairobi Commuter Rail (#NCR) project to the tune of USD 138.7 million (KSH 20 billion).

The NCR will enhance connectivity between the #CBD of Nairobi and its suburbs. The initial phase will see the installation of some 160 km of rail. The railway will be based on the metric gauge and will contribute to decongestion traffic within the bustling city of Nairobi.

“The Nairobi Commuter Railway Project has the capacity to transport thousands of passengers daily and can contribute to reduce traffic jams on the road network. It is expected that the operationalization of the NCR will also allow the reduction of the cost of transportation in Nairobi.”

The NCR will integrate and complement the #SGR long-distance train service and the metropolitan bus service. In the end, inhabitants and visitors in Nairobi will enjoy a number of modern, efficient and affordable transport options.
