Lula Launches Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty at G20 Summit 2024

On the first day of the G20 Summit 2024 (#G20Summit2024) in Rio, Brazilian President Lula da Silva announced the launch of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty (#GAAHAP). Brazil is holding the Presidency of G20 in 2024 and at the top of its agenda are #FoodSecurity and #PovertyAlleviation.

In his remarks, Lula pointed out that despite all the progress that humans have made, 9.1% of the global population or 733 millions of people around the world are still undernourished, based on statistics collected by the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

“In a world that produces nearly 6 billions tonnes of food every year, this is unacceptable! It is the task of those gathered around this table to address this shameful scourge that dishonours humanity. For this reason, we have made the launch of a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty the central goal of Brazil’s G20 presidency.”

So far 81 countries have signed up for the Alliance with 18 out of 20 #G20 members on board. In total, the Alliance is backed by 148 signatories, including 81 countries, 26 international organizations, 9 financial institutions, and 31 philanthropic foundations and non-government organizations (NGO).

The Director-General of the #FAO, QU Dongyu, urged all its member states to endorse the Alliance. DG Qu made reference that the eradication of poverty and hunger is part of the UN #SDG 1 & 2, as well as is related to SDG 10 which aims to reduce inequalities.

To reach its goal, the Alliance will compose a ‘policy basket’ that is made up of successful policies which have been deployed at scale in other countries or regions. In addition, the Alliance has proposed ‘Six Sprints’ encompassing (i) school meals, (ii) cash transfers, (iii) smallholder and family farming support, (iv) socio-economic inclusion, (v) integrated maternal and early childhood interventions, and (vi) water access.
