Zijin Mining Sign Concession Agreement with Tanzania for Kigoma Port at Dar es Salaam

On 6 August 2025, Zijin Mining signed the concession agreement with the Tanzanian Port Authority (TPA) to operate Kigoma Port and the Malindi Terminal in Dar es Salaam. Zijin VP Lin Hongying, Chinese Ambassador Chen Mingjian, Tanzanian Minister of Transport Makame Mbarawa, and Tanzania Port Authority GM Plasduce Mbossa attended the signing ceremony at Johari Rotana Hotel.

The concession agreement calls for Zijin to uplift the docks, yards and warehouses at Kogoma Port and Malindi Terminal. In addition, the port will be equipped with intelligent management systems.

“To address logistics and supply chain challenges, Zijin has planned an optimal water–land combined transport route along the eastern corridor. Mineral products will be transported by land to the Kalemie Port in DRC, shipped across the lake to Kigoma Port in Tanzania, then transported by land directly to Malindi Terminal at Dar es Salaam Port, before entering international shipping routes. This marks the opening of a core trade corridor linking Central Africa with East Africa.”

Zijin also plans to order bulk cargo ships to sail over Lake Tanganyika. The 2,000-tonne buk carriers are expected to be ready in 2026. It is hoped that the opening of this transport route will also give a boost to trade and the industrialization drive in the region.
