Canada’s Federal Government Greenlights $5B Crawford Nickel Mine
On 31 July 2026, Canadian Environment Minister Julie Dalbrusin gave the green lith to Canada Nickel’s Crawford Nickel project in northwestern Ontario. The Crawford mine has the largest reserves of #nickel deposits in the Western world. Nickel is one of the #CriticalMinerals used in the manufacture of stainless steel and rechargeable batteries.
The Crawford mine is located around 42 kilometers north of Timmins. Canada Nickel (TSXV: CNC) intends to raise as much as USD 5 billion using a mix of equity and debt financing. Once in operation, it will sustain nearly 4,000 jobs. The life expectancy of the mine is more than 40 years.
The Crawford Mine is one of 18 strategic projects identified by the Canadian Government to be fast-tracked and monitored via the Major Projects Office. These strategic projects have the potential to boost Canada’s economy and reduce reliance on foreign sources.
Today, Indonesia (65%), Russia (25%), and the Philippines (10%) are the top nickel mining nations in the world. Global production hovers around 3.6 million tonnes annually. Indonesia and the Philippines have for the IndoPhil Nickel Corridor in a bid to control the global nickel market.

Nickel has wide applications in aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors. Used in batteries, nickel helps to extend the range. Therefore, it is typically reserved for heavy-duty and high-end vehicles such as trucks, large cars, and luxury vehicles.
What was approved was the main federal permit, but a few other permits at the provincial and federal levels are still pending. The Crawford Project is expected to break ground by early 2027.
