BP Tranships First LNG from Greater Tortue Ahmeyim Project
On 17 April 2025, British Petroleum (BP) carried out the delivery of the first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) site off Senegal and Mauritania. A consignment of 174,000 cubic meters was transferred from the Floating LNG vessel Gimi to the carrier vessel British Sponsor.
The First LNG marks a significant milestone for the GTA site, turning Senegal and Mauritania into petroleum-exporting countries. The well hit the First Gas in December 2024, and the first batch of LNG was subsequently produced by Gimi in February 2025.

Getting to this stage was challenging. GTA is one of the deepest offshore developments i with water depths of nearly 3,000 meters. The discovery at Tortue was made back in 2015 and BP entered the game in 2017. The Grand Tortue Ahmeyim is owned by a consortium comprising of BP (56%), Kosmos Energy (27%), Petrosen (10%), and SMH (7%).
Phase One will scale production capacity up to 2.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). GTA has an estimated reserve of roughly 15 trillion cubic feet (tcf). The production will then add another to 3 mtpa in Phase Two, bringing the total production up to 6 mtpa. However, for that later phase, BP intends to utilize the so-called Gravity-Based Structure,, rather than another FLNG. The investment tranches into GTA are expected to cumulate to USD 5 billion, but is being carefully paced.
