Eni and Sonatrach Expand Cooperation to Further Reduce Carbon Footprint of Oil & Gas Sector in Algeria

On 17 August 2026, Eni and Sonatrach signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on the decarbonization of the Oil & Gas sector in Algeria. This new MoU can be viewed as a continuation and expansion of the original one signed in 2023, to reduce gas flaring and enhance gas recovery.

The new MoU further broadens the scope of cooperation by introducing new areas of collaboration. Thus, the two sides will promote reforestation to bolster carbon sequestration capacity.

Another notable initiative is the Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) campaign carried out over 800 kilometers of pipeline, fitted with 7,500 sensor points to detect fugitive emissions. Previously an option, LDAR has become a standard feature in all pipeline projects jointly operated by Eni and Sonatrach.

Eni has been present in Algeria since 1981. Today, Eni produces the equivalent of 132,000 barrels per day. With the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the implementation of the Mattei Plan, cooperation in energy between Italy and Africa have stepped up as the EU tries to diversify its sources.
