Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) Reports Handling 40 Million TEU in 2024

The Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) reported having handled 41.1 million TEU in 2024, compared to 38.8 million in 2023. As for the Tuas port, which started operation in September 2022, it has cumulatively processed 10 million TEU towards the end of February 2024 , marking an important milestone.

As per the master plan of Singapore, all the container terminals at Tanjong Pagar, Pasir Panjang, Keppel and others will be gradually consolidated at the new Tuas megaport. The Tuas Container Terminal is designed for a capacity of 65 million TEU, which Singapore plans to hit by 2040.

Another key feature of Tuas Container Terminal is its high degree of automation to achieve consistent high productivity. Tuas employs a fleet of state-of-the-art Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) which are electrically powered to move containers on the container yard. The AGV are equipped with RFID tags communicating via a 5G network and can run autonomously at speeds of up to 15.5 miles per hour without collision.

Being electrically rather than diesel powered, the fleet of AGV also contributes to reduce the carbon footprint. Currently, the AGV can run for six hours after a 20-minute recharge.

“Building on this positive momentum, we will strive to strengthen the synergies between our port operations and port-adjacent services, connecting our strategic nodes t create a more cohesive and integrated port ecosystem in line with PSA’s Node to Network Strategy.”

PSA CEO ONG Kim Pong

Next to the Tuas Container Terminal is a 18.5-hectare PSA Supply Chain Hub. The Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) can move pallets horizontally and vertically on a 24/7 basis. The Warehouse Management System (WMS) will be linked to the Port Management System and be able to exchange critical operation for the smooth integration and operation of the warehouse and port facilities.

Going forward, Tuas is putting into operations more berths, by expanding from three to eight berths. The employee count will also rise to 500, while the number of AGV in the container park will increase to 300. All this investment and technology will contribute to maintain Singapore as a leading international maritime hub of choice.
