Morocco Places Order for 18 Alstom High-Speed Trains Costing Nearly $1B

On 28 March 2025, Alstom confirmed that it has received an order for 18 high-speed train sets (#TGV in French) from Morocco. The total amount of the contract is estimated at EUR 781 million and the deal was financed by an exceptional #G2G loan from France to Morocco.

Talks about the procurement of new high-speed trainsets started last year. Now, this is an official confirmation that the negotiations have been finalized and the deal has been sealed.

The trainset destined for Morocco is similar to the new Avelia Horizon TGV M model which will be rolled out in France as from 2026. Each trainset has two levels and can accommodate up to 640 seating passengers. The cruising speed of the high-speed train is 320 kilometers per hour.

“This exceptional level of financing is yet another demonstration of the exemplary partnership between France and Morocco in the field of rail systems, which is at the origin of the success of the high-speed link between Tanger and Kenitra. In 2024, this high-speed railway link has registered more than 5 million passenger-trips.”

French Ambassador in Morocco Christopphe Lecourtier

It was during the state visit to Morocco of French President Macron in October 2024 that the two countries concluded a financial package. In addition to the rolling stock, Alstom also provides the signaling system for the high-speed network. Furthermore, Alstom has also supplied 240 tramways to ease urban mobility in the cities of Rabat and Casablanca.

Initially, the new high-speed trains will be deployed on the Tanger and Marrakech line, with an eventual extension toward Casablanca. The high-speed train will cover the distance between Tanger and Marrakech in under three hours. Morocco plans to have all 18 new high-speed trains up and running before its hosting of the World Cup in 2030.
