ICTSI Expands Seaport Management in Africa

On31 July2023, the International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) of Philipinnes announced that its has been selected by Transnet as the preferred bidder to develop and operate the Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 2.

ICTSI also operates four seaport terminals in Africa, notably, the Onne Multipurpose Terminal in Nigeria, Kribi Multipurpose Terminal in Cameroon, Matadi Gateway Terminal in Democratic Republic of Congo and the Toamasina International Container Terminal in Madagascar. The Durban Container Terminal is one of the busiest in Africa and will be the largest in the ICTSI’s portfolio.

The Pier 2 of Durban handles 72% of the port throughput and 46% of the South Africa’s port traffic. With ICTSI’s proven trac record in developing high-performance gateways across emerging economies, the company is confident to bring Durban up to the level of a world-class terminal that can serve as a catalyst for trade and economic growth in the Southern Africa region.

In 2021, ICTSI successfully renewed its concession for the Container Terminal at Toamasina seaport in Madagascar. ICTSI has held the concession since 20005 and the new agreement will extend for another 15 years from 2025 to 2040. In the same breath, ICTSI upgrade the Toamasina port with the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS)

The Madati Gateway Terminal (MGT) is a natural gateway opening to the Atlantic Ocean to the resource-rich DR Congo. In addition to rrunning the latest TOS, it also has implemented EDI and eBilling systems to facilitate customs clearance and billing.

ICTSI Adopts Navis N4 TOS for Managing Seaports

In Nigeria, ICTSI not only handles containerized cargo both also general cargo as well as oil & gas. Nigeria is one of the top hydrocarbon producing countries in Africa. Adjacent to the Onne Multpurpose Terminal (OMT) is the Onne Hydrocarbon Free Zone.

The Kribi Multpurpose Terminal has been managed by ICTSI since 2020 following an international request for proposals (RFP). In addition to containers, the multipurpose port can handle a variety of ships and cargo, including clinker, wood, RORO ships. Cameroon serves as a gateway for landlocked countries such as Tchad and Central African Republic.

With a 5th feather to its hat, ICTSI is poised to consolidate its position as a major port operator in Africa thanks t its adaptive and battle-proven solutions for the emerging continent.
