Mauritius and Mozambique Extend Cooperation on LNG

On 22 December 2023, the Cabinet under the leadership of the Mauritian PM Pravind Jugnauth approved the extension of a cooperation in the field of #LNG between the Mauritius State Trading Corporation (STC) and Mozambique Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH).

Back in January 2019, Mozambican Filipe Nyusi undertook a state visit to Mauritius to reinforce bilateral ties. Then, in August 2019, the Mauritius-Mozambique Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (#JPCC) held an important meeting where several agreements were concluded, including the one on #LNG.

In view of the uncertainties surrounding the Global Supply Chain (#GSC), Mauritius is pondering diversification and nearshoring of its LNG sources in a bid to enhance its #EnergySecurity.

On the other hand, Mozambique is hoping that the Mauritius International Finance Centre (#IFC) can come into play in order to funnel #FDI and structure deals around #LNG in Mozambique.

It is worth highlighting that Mozambique possesses one of the largest reserves of natural gas in the world. Therefore, this accord is a win-win situation for both countries with a view to further ‘develop the LNG business.’
