Huawei Sees Huge Potential in the Green Energy Transition of Africa

Viewing renewable energy as a promising future market, Huawei has been promoting its #PV solutions around the world. In Africa, the once telecoms-focused firm has managed to find a new bright spot under the sun.

In South Africa, Huawei provided the 2MWh energy storage system to the Sunspot solar farm in Montagu near Cape Town. In Zimbabwe, Huawei has partnered with Grid Africa to implement a 72 MW PV project which will power mining operations.

In Mauritius, Huawei has partnered with Qair to develop a number of PV projects totaling 100 MW of capacity and 290 MWh of storage. The Government of Mauritius has set an challenging objective to reach 60% in its energy mx as part of its fight against #ClimateChange.

In Nigeria, Huawei is working with the Nigeria Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to deploy mini grids solutions. A PV Lab has also been set up to assist in upgrading local capacity and contribute to scale up and speed up the transition.

Similarly, Huawei is collaborating with the Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAoL) to assist in capacity building and localization of solar technologies in order to harness the rich irradiation in the Sahara desertic region.

In Ghana, Huawei signed an agreement with Meinergy to accelerate the energy transition in October 2024. The agreement calls for solar with storage to the tune of 1GW and 500 MWh respectively.

In 2024, the global PV market was estimated at 70 GW, with storage reaching 3 GWh. Thus, Huawei believes its early strategic reorientation into this fast-growing #EnergyTransition sector will contribute significantly to its growth in the future.
