Sudanese Conglomerate Al Badri to Invest $446M in Sugar Complex in Mauritania

On 31 July 2025, the Sudanese company Al Badri signed a Public-Private Partnership (#PPP) agreement with the Mauritanian Ministry of Economy & Finance to develop an agro-industrial complex around sugar production in Foum Legleita in southern Mauritania.

Al Badri is a conglomerate based in Sudan with businesses spanning agribusiness and energy. For this deal, it has taken the lead in forming a consortium to implement this mega-project.

In the first phase, some 17,000 hectares will be put into cultivation of sugar cane. At the same time, a dam with a capacity to deliver 500 million cubic meters of water will be built to meet the water and electricity needs of the project. The water can be used for irrigation, while the electricity can power the sugar factory.

The sugar factory is expected to become operational within three years. It is projected to produce nearly 250,000 tonnes of white sugar, corresponding to at least 60% of the national need of Mauritania.

Currently, Mauritania imports nearly 400,000 tonnes of white refined sugar annually. The sugar is imported mainly from Brazil, Guatemala, and Algeria. Therefore, the Foum Legleita Sugar Complex is expected to save substantial foreign currencies for Mauritania.
